Background:

Gary Hieftje is an expert in analytical chemistry, which means, among other things, that he invents instruments that improve chemists' capacity for quantifying and analyzing their samples. Hieftje's list of honors and achievements in this area includes the IR 100 Award, the Anachem Award, the Meggers Award, the Lester W. Strock Medal, and the American Chemical Society's Chemical Instrumentation Award.
