Background:

• Expert in Russian history to 1917, the Russian revolutions, the Soviet Union in World War II, and Soviet-American relations.
• His book, "The Bolsheviks Come to Power: The Revolution of 1917 in Petrograd," was only the second history text by a Western author to be published in the Soviet Union.
• Was visiting in the Soviet Union during the August 1991 coup.
