Gerald Carlyss

Background:
Gerald Carlyss was principal timpanist of the Philadelphia Orchestra for 21 years from 1967 - 1988. During his tenure with the orchestra, he was also Chairman of the Percussion Department at the Curtis Institute of Music. Prior to Philadelphia, Mr. Carlyss was principal timpanist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from 1965 -1967. Since 1987 Mr. Carlyss has been on the faculty at the School of Music at Indiana University.
Mr. Carlyss is a 1965 graduate of the Juilliard School of Music where he studied with Saul Goodman and Morris Goldenberg while earning a M.S and B.M degree. While a student in New York, Mr. Carlyss free lanced and played percussion with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the New York City Opera and Ballet Orchestras plus numerous other musical organizations. Since 1989, Mr. Carlyss has substituted on timpani with the Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and the St. Louis and Indianapolis Symphonies.
Mr. Carlyss is an endorser for Vic Firth Inc. and the Avedis Zildjian Cymbal Co.
Many students of Mr. Carlyss have gone on to very successful careers in symphony orchestras, major military bands, various educational institutions and free lancing both on the east and west coasts of the U.S. as well as Europe and Australia.
