Get out of town!
If you're itchin' to get out of town but think a vacation would be too expensive, a little research could turn up some deals that are too good to pass up.
- TravelZoo.com features a list of some of the best last-minute travel ideas, usually updated every week. The site researches all major airlines, hotels and discount Web sites (such as Expedia and Hotwire) for the best available deals in popular destinations. Most discounts have an expiration date ranging from one month to the weekend. If you're a little more flexible on departure dates, try TravelZoo's top 20 deals of the week.
- Most airlines, such as Delta and American Airlines, have weekly specials to fill up extra seats on some last-minute flights. Check airline Web sites frequently to catch great deals, but remember to read the fine print. Some discounts have strict restrictions or hidden fees.
- Be flexible about your plans. You may have to have to take an early morning flight or adjust the length of your vacation, but the destination may be worth it.
- If you're traveling as a couple, consider buying a travel package. In some cases, you can snag a flight and hotel room for less than the cost of an airline ticket. Prices are fixed regardless of when you book your trip so you don't have to worry about soaring airline prices as your departure date comes closer.
- Amanda Cecil, assistant professor in the Department of Tourism, Conventions and Event Management at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, says to take care of the little things at home before you take off. "Remember to think through your responsibilities: pay your bills, make arrangements for the pets (or kids!), have someone pick up your mail and take out your trash," she said.
