European Wind Energy Academy honors IU Bloomington atmospheric scientist

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington atmospheric scientist Rebecca Barthelmie has been honored for her wind energy research by the European Academy of Wind Energy.
Barthelmie, a professor of atmospheric science and sustainability, accepted the EAWE's Academy Scientific Award for 2009 at the European Wind Energy Association annual conference and exhibition in Marseille, France, on March 16. EWEC is the premier event in wind energy and was attended by more than 7,500 delegates. Barthelmie is currently on sabbatical, continuing her research into power output from large wind farms at the Risoe DTU Laboratory for Sustainable Energy in Denmark.
"Rebecca has contributed enormously to the fact that the power production of wind farms can now be estimated with much greater accuracy than 10 years ago," said Delft University (Netherlands) aerospace professor and President of the EAWE Gijs van Kuik, who presented the award to Barthelmie. "She is renowned for the many projects she carried out for offshore wind condition measurements and she is the recognized expert on British offshore wind farms."
The Academy Scientific Award is given to a single scientist each year and is the only one of its kind in the world.
Given increased interest in alternative energy sources in the U.S., Barthelmie's research on the efficacy of wind energy is likely to be cited by contractors and legislators seeking to introduce turbines to America's windier regions, such as northern Indiana.
The EAWE is a co-operation on wind energy R&D of research institutes and universities in seven countries: Germany, Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Norway. The academy is founded to formulate and execute joint R&D projects and to coordinate high quality scientific research and education on wind energy on a European level. The members include 29 entities, representing seven EU countries and more than 80 percent of the long-term research activity in the field of wind energy.
