Godspell will open on Friday, April 17, and run through Saturday, April 25, in the Campus Auditorium of Northside Hall in South Bend. Director Randy Colborn is pleased to be working on a project that ushers in the return of musical theatre to the IUSB Theatre Company.

"Godspell is an excellent example of the American Theatre of the past almost 40 years, musical or otherwise," Colborn said. "The music of Godspell is beautiful and accessible. And Godspell provides excellent opportunities for students to participate in musical theater."

John-Michael Tebelak wrote Godspell as his master's thesis project at Carnegie Mellon University in 1970. Stephen Schwartz rewrote the music and lyrics prior to the show opening off-Broadway at Cherry Lane Theatre in 1971 and on Broadway in 1976.

Godspell depicts the ritual stories of the Bible through the leadership of Jesus, who comes to the characters to create community through finding common ground. The story comes to life through its music, including "God Save the People," "By My Side," "All Good Gifts" and the ever popular "Day by Day." Based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, Godspell is one of the most successful musicals in history.

The production is a communal endeavor by the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts conceived by Dean Marvin Curtis to highlight the talents of IU South Bend students and faculty. The musical brings together a cast composed entirely of IU South Bend students, many of whom are theater and music majors. The production team is made up of faculty and students from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts. Other significant support and assistance has come from members of the Visual Arts faculty and the production staff of the school.
