The Vice President for Research is a powerful position within the Indiana University system. The office holder administers programs on all IU campuses, and oversees day-to-day research operations such as those that take place in the recently dedicated Multidisciplinary Science Building II, pictured here.

The university search committee that identified the finalists will meet again and make further recommendations to IU President Michael McRobbie.

The finalists and their campus visit dates are:

  • Michael Pazzani, vice president for research and graduate and professional education at Rutgers University: Dec. 1-2
  • Jorge José, vice president for research at the University of Buffalo: Dec. 4-5

Distinguished Professor Michael J. Wade, associate vice provost for faculty and academic affairs, chairs the search committee for IU's new vice president for research. The 16-member committee includes IU Bloomington and IUPUI faculty as well as a regional faculty representative from IU South Bend.

"The search committee has worked long and hard to narrow a strong pool of potential candidates," Wade said. "We have invited these excellent candidates to visit and meet with a wide spectrum of faculty and staff. The committee looks forward to the visits and to receiving comments from our colleagues on the candidates."

Pazzani has been at Rutgers University since 2005. In addition to his position as a vice president, he is a professor of computer science. Prior to his work at Rutgers, he was a division director at the National Science Foundation from 2002-2005. He was also chair of the Information and Computer Science Department at University of California, Irvine.

José has served as vice president for research since 2005 at the University of Buffalo, which is part of the State University of New York system. He is a professor of physics and also has an appointment in the physiology and biophysics department. Prior to his position at Buffalo, he was a distinguished professor and chair of the physics department at Northeastern University.

More information on the search, including candidates' CVs, is available at http://www.indiana.edu/~vppp/recruitment/vpresearch.shtml.

Currently, Bobby Schnabel, dean of the IU Bloomington School of Informatics and Computing, is serving as interim vice president for research. The Office of Research Administration as well as the vice provost for research at IU Bloomington and vice chancellor for research at IUPUI report to the vice president for research.
