IU professor to discuss local government reform on 'Indiana Lawmakers'

INDIANAPOLIS -- John Krauss, director of the Indiana University Public Policy Institute and the Center for Urban Policy and the Environment at IUPUI, will participate in a discussion about local government reform on this week's edition of WFYI's "Indiana Lawmakers."
Joining host Jon Schwantes will be Krauss, State Rep. John Barnes, State Sen. Phil Boots and Steve Buschmann of the Indiana Township Association. They will examine this question: Can the state save money through consolidation of township units, or are there practical and political reasons for keeping those offices, large and small, open?
Krauss is clinical professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and adjunct professor of law in the IU School of Law-Indianapolis.
In 2008, the Center for Urban Policy and the Environment provided staff and faculty for the Indiana Commission on Local Government Reform, appointed by Gov. Mitch Daniels and chaired by former Gov. Joe Kernan and Indiana Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard. The commission and the center staff conducted six public input forums around the state, facilitated discussions with citizen and interest groups, and created a Web site that enabled the public to keep informed and submit comments and suggestions.
The commission report, issued in December 2008, included 27 recommendations to make local government more efficient, effective, understandable and accountable, calling for changes in counties, cities, townships, libraries, schools and other entities.
"Indiana Lawmakers," in its 29th year, is broadcast weekly while the Indiana General Assembly is in session. Check local TV listings for the time the program airs.
