Law School, LSSSE welcome Carole Silver

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 2, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Maurer School of Law and the Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE) announced the addition of Georgetown Law Center's Carole Silver to both organizations.

Silver became a professor of law effective Thursday (July 1) and will begin directing LSSSE later this summer.

She comes to IU after serving as a visiting professor of law and executive director of the Center for the Study of the Legal Profession at Georgetown Law Center. Prior to that, Silver was a faculty member at Northwestern University Law School. Silver earned her law degree from the Maurer School of Law in 1980.

"I am delighted to be back at the law school," she said. "It is a place that was incredibly stimulating when I was here as a student, and at the same time provided a sufficiently supportive environment to encourage students to take risks in their learning. I'm looking forward to enjoying that same balance as a member of the faculty."

At the Maurer School of Law, Silver will teach courses on the legal profession, globalization, and business organizations. Her scholarship and teaching experience will allow her to contribute immediately to the Law School's new Center on the Global Legal Profession, said Professor William Henderson, the center's director.

"Carole is an exceptional addition to our faculty and to the center," Henderson said. "Her research on globalization and its relation to legal practice, education, and professional regulation will provide a critical component to our center's success, and we are excited to begin working together."

Silver's recent scholarship focuses on the role of U.S. legal education in the careers of international attorneys and the intersection of gender and globalization in the context of large law firm practice. She has also examined the globalization strategies of U.S.-based law firms and the ethics of outsourcing legal services offshore.

In addition to joining the law school's faculty, Silver will serve as director of LSSSE, the collaborative effort that houses one of the largest databases of legal education and law student experiences in the country.

"LSSSE offers an opportunity to examine the learning experiences of law students, and in this, it provides law schools with the tools to change their environments and enrich the lessons gained by their students," Silver said. "The focus on what happens within law school combined with the ability to compare results with peer schools makes LSSSE a terrific resource for improvement and assessment."

Silver commended outgoing director George Kuh for his dedication and commitment to the program.

"George has built such incredible teams at LSSSE and the Center for Postsecondary Research," Silver said. "It will be a challenge to fill just one of his shoes, let alone both."

Silver's work has appeared in the Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics, International Lawyer, and the Virginia Journal of International Law, among others. She has been an affiliated scholar with the American Bar Foundation since 2008, and is a member of the American Bar Association's Ethics 20/20 Commission.
