IUAA awards Jerry Foster Memorial Scholarship

July 29, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Alumni Association has awarded the 2010 Jerry Foster Memorial Scholarship to Noah Sommers of Lafayette, Ind. Sommers is a junior at IU Bloomington.

A McCutchen High School graduate, Sommers is majoring in telecommunications in the IU College of Arts and Sciences. He is involved in activities on the IU campus that strongly support his major. He produces a show for IUSTV and has a radio show on WIUX -- both the television station and radio station are student run.

He works at the front desk of the Wilkie Residence Center and was elected president of his floor. His father, Larry Sommers, is a current board member of the West Central Indiana Chapter of the IU Alumni Association.

"The Jerry Foster Scholarship gives me more time to expand my experience in the telecommunications school," Sommers said. "This scholarship allows me to spend less time working and more time learning about the major that I love."

Awarded based on academic achievement and financial need, the $1,500 Jerry Foster Memorial Scholarship is granted to full-time undergraduate students on any IU campus who are the sons or daughters of an IUAA alumni chapter officer or board member.

Jerry Foster, BS'74, was a devoted IU alumnus. He died in December 1992 after serving as a director of alumni chapters for the IUAA for more than six years. The Jerry Foster Memorial Scholarship was established in 1994.

The IU Alumni Association is dedicated to serving the university and its diverse alumni, students, and friends. As one of the nation's largest alumni organizations, serving nearly 540,000 graduates worldwide, the IUAA provides many programs and services to its members, non-member alumni, and the university.
