Summary of Experience:

Twenty-five years of administrative and managerial experience in intercollegiate athletics, physical education and recreation at public and private universities. Extensive knowledge of athletic and academic issues as they relate to the administration of an NCAA Division I athletic program. Specific responsibilities include: directing all administration and operational activities of an athletic department; developing and monitoring an athletic department budget; supervising and evaluating department personnel; representing the athletic department to university constituencies (administration, faculty, students and board of trustees); representing the university to external constituencies (alumni, fans, donors, sponsors, media and other institutional and governing bodies); and overseeing all athletic department fundraising programs.

United States Military Academy at West Point
Director of Intercollegiate Athletics - 1999-Present

  • Provide leadership, supervision, goal setting and management of a 25-sport NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic program with $23 million dollar budget serving nearly 800 student athletes.
  • Serve as one of three senior level administrators on the Superintendent's Executive Management Team directing a comprehensive and integrated program consisting of academic, military and physical development.
  • Developed and funded an athletic facility master plan which has resulted in the design, construction and utilization of numerous, significant athletic facilities. Included in this plan are a $25 million, 120,000-square-foot football training facility; a new $10 million stadium press box and club seating area; a world-class gymnastics center; a state-of-the-art softball complex; a $10 million, 30,000-square-foot basketball office and locker room complex; a new men's and women's soccer complex; and the nation's finest intercollegiate rifle marksmanship center. Primary funding source for these projects were private gifts.
  • Overhauled annual giving program resulting in a 300 percent increase in gifts and a doubling of the average gift.
  • Developed and negotiated a national request for proposals resulting in a new multi-year agreement averaging $4 million annually for the rights to the Army/Navy football game. Negotiations resulted in a 75 percent revenue increase over prior contract.
  • Created in-house radio network with flagship station, ESPN-NYC, along with 16 national affiliates. First NYC radio flagship in over 30 years.
  • Developed in-house regional television production for the first time in school history.
  • Enhanced coach and staff accountability systems and support services which resulted in 34 percent of all student athletes achieving recognition on the dean's list.
  • Created corporate brand identity program which enhanced departmental image, and increased merchandise and licensing revenue.
  • Conducted seminars with athletes and coaches to reinforce and monitor the West Point honor code and reinforce the guiding principal of "choosing the harder right over the easier wrong."
  • Completed overhaul of coaching model, evaluative process and funding resulting in a recent renaissance of competitiveness in intercollegiate athletics.

  • Responsible for the overall administration and management of 19-sport NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic program.
  • Effectively manage and monitor a budget in excess of $10 million dollars and developed a reserve in excess of $5 million dollars.
  • Provided leadership in attaining Title IX compliance by developing and implementing a comprehensive gender equity plan.
  • Reorganized external operations, including fundraising and marketing, which has resulted in significant increases in revenue and exposure.
  • Secured over $400,000 in funding to create an Athletic Life Skills Center for the enhancement of student athletes' academic and social experience.
  • Developed athletic facilities master plan resulting in over $1.6 million to develop football office complex.
  • Increased departmental and university marketing and public relations programs by developing the statewide Redbird Radio Network and procuring extensive local, regional and national television exposure.
  • Improved athletic facilities by successfully soliciting over $500,000 in advertising support to fabricate and install new scoreboards. Additional funds were secured to dramatically improve training facilities, locker rooms and playing sites for many revenue and non-revenue sports.
  • Successfully bid and was awarded NCAA 1999 women's basketball regional finals and 1996 NACWA volleyball tournament. Additionally selected to serve as host for several high school state championships.
  • Received Missouri Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy in 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998; symbolic of overall athletic program excellence.
  • Chosen to serve as NCAA peer reviewer for intercollegiate athletic certification programs on three different occasions.
  • Coordinated institution's successful NCAA certification process in 1994-1995.
  • Served as Gateway Football Conference President; chaired Missouri Valley conference media, champion and finance committees; member of Gender Equity, Long-Range Planning and Expansion Committee for Missouri Valley/Gateway Conference.
  • Provide leadership to insure student athletes' graduation rate meets or exceeds institutional goals. Current graduation rate of nearly 70 percent, well above that of the general student population on campus.
  • Negotiated contracts for preseason and postseason appearances in men's and women's basketball in the NIT, Big Island Invitational and San Juan Shootout.
  • Chair, University Facilities Coordinating Council with responsibility for all intercollegiate, recreational and physical education facilities.

University of Miami, Florida
Senior Associate Athletic Director - 1992-1993

  • Provided daily operations management for all athletic programs and projects, including administrative support for coaching staff.
  • Established procedures for preparing and monitoring annual department budget in excess of $18 million dollars.
  • Responsible for the development of personnel procedures, resolution of employee-related problems, annual reviews, compensation and benefits.
  • Supervised, evaluated and provided direction to senior level administrative staff including associate and assistant athletic directors.
  • Assisted the Director of Athletics in the negotiation of departmental television and radio rights fees, game guarantees, concessions and coaches' contracts.
  • Served as Tournament Director for 1992 NCAA Division I baseball regional and NCAA Division I women's basketball regional which established new records in attendance and revenue.
  • Responsible for raising nearly $3 million dollars in annual gifts in 1992.
  • Supervised the planning and coordination of team travel for the 1993 Sugar Bowl, Big East Conference and NCAA Championship events.

  • Overall responsibility for men's intercollegiate athletic department including the management and evaluation of all administrative and coaching staff, budget management and control, fundraising and strategic planning.
  • Represented the university with the PAC-10 Conference and NCAA to assure appropriate representation to best meet the needs of the institution.
  • Successfully negotiated contracts for the relocation of basketball games to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum for regular season and tournament contests.
  • Negotiated rights fees for Cal Football weekly highlight show on CBS affiliate KPIX.
  • Established the Otis Spunkmeyer Holiday Basketball Tournament by securing title sponsorship in excess of $500,000.
  • Renovated several major athletic facilities by securing over $400,000 in private gifts for Evans Baseball Field and Harmon Arena.

  • Developed strategic plans for the management of a $1 million dollar budget which generated $6 million dollars through gifts, ticket sales and corporate sponsorships.
