A Baker’s Dozen! Indiana Makes it 13 in a Row With 3-1 Win over Iowa

April 30, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana Hoosiers (33-15, 13-2 Big Ten) continued their win streak, pushing it to 13 straight games with a 3-1 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes (26-20, 8-7 Big Ten) at the IU Softball Field. Indiana has now won 14 of 15 at home this season and have won a school-record 12 consecutive Big Ten games.

Morgan Melloh (28-14) went the distance in the circle for the Hoosiers, her seventh straight complete game victory. She allowed just two hits in the game and one run while walking three and striking out nine. She improves her Indiana single-season record for strikeouts to 427 in the process and now has 1565 in her career to remain in ninth on the NCAA career list.

In the three-run fourth inning, Amanda Wagner jump started the inning with a solo home run to left field, her fifth of the season. Morgan Melloh singled through the right side of the infield ahead of an infield single by Jenna Abraham. Shelby Gogreve came on to run for Melloh at second base and would come around to score the second run of the inning on a RBI single by Cassie Gogreve. Meaghan Murphy extended the lead with a sharp single to left field to make it a 3-0 bulge for the Hoosiers.

Johnnie Dowling led off the top of the 5th inning for Iowa with a solo home to cut the Indiana lead to 3-1. The only other hit of the game was a double by Chelsea Carmody in the third inning.

But Melloh turned away any semblance of an Iowa rally in the final two innings to lead the Hoosiers to the win. Of the nine strikeouts in the game, seven were on called third strikes and Melloh only allowed two balls hit to the outfield in the game - the home run and the double.

The game will be re-broadcast on the Big Ten Network at 2:00 p.m. ET on Monday, May 2.

Indiana and Iowa will return to the IU Softball Field for the series finale on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. start time. Students from Monroe County Elementary Schools are encouraged to attend Sunday's game for an autograph session after the game.
