Pryor named associate vice provost at IU Bloomington

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 16, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs announced today (May 16) the appointment of Sara C. Pryor as associate vice provost for faculty and academic affairs at IU Bloomington.

Pryor is the Provost Professor of Atmospheric Science in the Atmospheric Science Program, Department of Geography, and the Center for Research in Environmental Science, College of Arts and Sciences; as well as adjunct professor, School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Anthropological Center for Training and Research on Global Environmental Change. Her appointment takes effect July 1.

As associate vice provost, Pryor will assume various faculty development responsibilities including campus-level promotion reviews and new faculty orientation workshops. In addition, Pryor will be centrally involved in campus efforts to increase the representation of women and minorities among the Bloomington faculty.

"Professor Pryor brings to the position a deep commitment to the academic enterprise at IU Bloomington, extensive knowledge of the campus, and the respect of her colleagues," said Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson. "I am delighted that she has agreed to serve as associate vice provost and look forward to working with her on critical issues of faculty development and diversity."

"Sara Pryor brings a wealth of experience to this position, having recently been selected as a fellow in the Academic Leadership Program of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC)," said Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs Tom Gieryn. "Sara has a special interest in the status of women in scientific and technical disciplines, and she will make great contributions to ongoing efforts to diversify the faculty on the Bloomington campus."

"The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs plays a key role in faculty recruitment, retention and development," Pryor said. "It is a privilege to have been selected to ensure that faculty excellence on the IU Bloomington campus be fostered and recognized."

In addition to her position at IU, Pryor is also a visiting distinguished professor at the Atmospheric Environment Institute at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, and senior scientist with the Department of Wind Energy and Atmospheric Physics at the Risø National Laboratory in Denmark.

Her research focuses on two major areas: (1) physical climatology, specifically climate change and variability that involve climate downscaling and regional manifestations of climate change and variability; and (2) atmospheric chemistry and atmosphere-surface exchange of reactive gases and particles. She is currently PI on three grants from the National Science Foundation and is under contract by the International Atomic Energy Authority.

Pryor has published numerous articles in internationally renowned journals, has edited two books (one is forthcoming) and is a contributing author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (Chapter: 'Wind Energy'). Pryor also serves as editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres and was recently appointed to the new National Climate Assessment and Development Committee, convened by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to help the U.S. government prepare for and deal with climate change.

Pryor is a past Fellow of the Academic Leadership Program, recipient of the IU Presidents Award in recognition of outstanding teaching, research and service, and she was given the rank of Provost Professor in 2010.
