CLEAR Health Information receives Regenstrief Foundation grant

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 26, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Regenstrief Foundation Inc. has awarded Indiana University's Center for Law, Ethics, and Applied Research in Health Information a $425,000 grant that will help the center fulfill its mission of addressing critical ethical and legal challenges surrounding health information.

CLEAR Health Information will use the grant to renovate its space in the IU Innovation Center on the Bloomington campus, and add additional amenities to its office space in the Health Information and Translational Sciences building on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. Renovations are expected to be completed at both facilities in early 2012.

Both locations will be equipped with state-of-the-art telepresence video conferencing capabilities, enabling more efficient communication possibilities between both offices and with external audiences around the globe. The enhanced infrastructure will help integrate the resources of Indianapolis and Bloomington and facilitate closer collaboration between CLEAR Health Information and the Regenstrief Institute, the Indiana Health Information Exchange and other Indiana partners.

"This generous support from the Regenstrief Foundation allows CLEAR to enhance our joint research capacity in Bloomington and Indianapolis, which will be key to attacking complex ethical and policy problems in health information technology," said CLEAR Health Information co-director Dr. Eric Meslin.

Formed in late 2010, CLEAR Health Information has undertaken the unique challenges posed by the digitization and storage of medical records and other data. With personal health information being created and collected today at a faster rate than ever before, the center is helping supply the legal, ethical, and usability analysis that is critical to patient and policymaker trust.

From a blue-ribbon panel working to enact Institute of Medicine recommendations on health privacy rules to a study investigating how information technology can be used to improve the lives of mental health patients, CLEAR Health Information is committed to pursuing research that will facilitate treatment and research, improve health outcomes for patients, and heighten accountability.

Since 1969, the Regenstrief Foundation's mission has been to provide support for innovative research directed toward improving the efficiency, quality and accessibility of healthcare.
