Funding awarded for multidisciplinary projects at IU Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Seven initiatives developed by faculty members at Indiana University Bloomington have been awarded funding from the Multidisciplinary Ventures and Seminars Fund, administered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs.

The fund supports new projects developed by faculty members from two or more academic disciplines, furnishing seed money to get interdisciplinary research under way and to encourage faculty members to establish fruitful collaborations with colleagues from different parts of campus. Awards were made for the fall 2011 and spring 2012 application cycles.

Projects awarded funding this spring include:

  • Sylvia Plath Symposium 2012 -- Activities to supplement a five-day symposium that will take place in October 2012 at IU Bloomington, marking the 50-year anniversary of the celebrated poems that Plath wrote in October 1962. Awardees are Cherry Williams of Lilly Library and Christoph Irmscher of the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Economics of Education Seminar Series -- To help bring four to six specialists to campus to conduct colloquia on the economics of education. Awardees are Ashlyn Aiko Nelson of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Cassandra Guarino of the School of Education and Michael Kaganovich of the Department of Economics in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Beyond Imported Magic: Studying Science and Technology in Latin America -- Support for a two-day workshop on the dissemination of science and technology in Latin America. Awardees are Eden Medina of the School of Informatics and Computing, Matthew Guterl of the Department of American Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences and Shane Green of the Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Critical Image Studies, Cultural Understanding and Globalization: Developing a Multidisciplinary Agenda for Research and Praxis -- Forums and presentations at IU Bloomington related to the conference "Education Through Art: Teaching for Global Understanding and Engagement," to be presented in June 2012 in Indianapolis by the International and U.S. Societies for Education Through Art. Awardees are Marjorie Manifold, Barbara Dennis, Martha Nyikos and Hallie Catherine Jones of the School of Education, Hilary Kahn of the Center for the Study of Global Change, Jeanne Nemeth of the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI, Jon Simons of the Department of Communication and Culture in the College of Arts and Sciences and Steve Willis of Missouri State University.
  • Randomized Control Trial of an Online Parent Education Program for Separating Parents -- A project focused on the collection of data on the effectiveness of online education programs for parents who are separating. Awardees are Amy Holtzworth-Munroe and Brian D'Onofrio of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences and Amy Applegate of the Maurer School of Law.

Projects awarded funding in the fall of 2011 include:

  • Reframing the Global Seminar -- A five-year initiative of the Center for the Study of Global Change and Indiana University Press. Awardees are Stephanie DeBoer of the Department of Communication and Culture in the College of Arts and Sciences and Lessie Jo Frazier of the departments of American Studies and Gender Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Digital Technology, Open Access, and the Challenges of Intellectual Property -- Awardees are Akin Adesokan of the Department of Comparative Literature in the College of Arts and Sciences, Marion Frank-Wilson of IU Libraries and Beth Buggenhagen of the Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Multidisciplinary Ventures and Seminars Fund is designed to encourage interdisciplinary exchange and intellectual growth into new and multidisciplinary areas of inquiry. Proposals are encouraged that draw together two or more disciplines in an innovative way, including those fostering the university goals of globalization and internationalization of research and creative activities.
