Got Milk? Try Chocolate After Your Workout

Chocolate milk as a workout recovery drink? For athletes participating in high endurance sports that stress constant, sustained movement -- like cycling, swimming or long-distance running -- chocolate milk rules. "It's water plus a whole lot more," says physiologist Joel Stager, director of the Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming at IU. He studied chocolate milk's performance as a recovery beverage on nine cyclists, who biked until exhaustion and then rested for four hours. The cyclists drank chocolate milk, Gatorade or the high-carbohydrate sports drink Endurox R4 during their break and then cycled to exhaustion again. Those who drank chocolate milk performed just as well as those who drank other beverages.
