University of California buys into IU co-run Kuali Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 12, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- University of California leaders recently announced an investment of $1 million in the Kuali Project, a large-scale collaboration of university and college software gurus to develop reliable and low-cost financial software for America's education and research institutions.

Indiana University founded the Kuali Project in 2004 with the University of Hawaii, the National Association of College and University Business Officers and rSmart, a private organization that supports open-source software in education. The University of Arizona, Cornell University, Michigan State University and San Joaquin Delta Community College subsequently joined the consortium, which now includes the UC system. All partners in the project contribute funding and expertise to Kuali's development.

"The Kuali community is delighted with UC's considerable investment expertise in steering our collective software future," said Brad Wheeler, chief information officer for IU and chair of the Kuali Foundation Board of Directors.

Current incarnations of Kuali software evolved from IU's own Financial Information System. The Kuali software package is composed of modules, presently: chart of accounts, general ledger, transactions, reporting and workflow. In the works are additional modules: accounts receivable, budgeting, capital assets, management, endowment, enhanced decision support/reporting, labor distribution, purchasing/accounts payable and pre- and post-award research administration.

In recent years, many universities and colleges have experienced difficulty and frustration with third-party financial management software systems. Kuali Project leaders expect their software will provide a secure, less expensive and dependable option for universities and colleges to manage their accounts.

The Kuali Project is mainly funded by member institutions. It has received $2.5 million in additional support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
