An American masterpiece: "The Crucible"
Indiana University Bloomington's Department of Theatre and Drama presents one of America's greatest plays and a powerful example of how the theatre reflects and reacts to the society around it. Winner of the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play, The Crucible by Pulitzer Prize-winner Arthur Miller opens in the Ruth N. Halls Theatre on Friday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. and continues through Nov. 11 and 13-18.
With funding from IU's Moveable Feast of the Arts, the department will present a special high school matinee of The Crucible on Nov. 16 at 10 a.m.
The talented cast of The Crucible -- Arthur Miller's powerful and timeless depiction of how intolerance and mass hysteria can intersect and tear a community apart -- includes many graduate and undergraduate theatre and drama majors working in conjunction with Dan Kremer, a member of Actors' Equity Association. Kremer, who will play Governor Danforth, has worked with The Oregon Shakespeare Festival, American Conservatory Theatre and Yale Repertory Theatre. An interview with Kremer, in which he discusses his visit to IU, is available at http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/4338.html.
John R. Armstrong (Happy Birthday Wanda June, Falsettos, Our Country's Good) will perform (as his master's thesis project) the lead role of John Proctor. For more about how he has prepared to take on the role of one of dramatic literature's most legendary characters, go to http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/4340.html.
The creative team for The Crucible includes costume designer Katherine Garlick (A Chorus Line), who is working on The Crucible for her master's thesis project. Read more about Garlick at http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/4339.html.
The Crucible opens Friday, Nov. 10, and runs Nov. 11 and 13-18. Performances will take place in the Ruth N. Halls Theatre. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $16 for adults and $13 for students, seniors and anyone 30 and younger (discounts Monday to Thursday only). Student rush tickets are available the day of each performance; students with a valid IU I.D. may purchase any available tickets for $10 cash. Group prices are available.
