IU President Myles Brand comments on the signing of the budget and taxation reform bill by Gov. Frank O'Bannon:
"This bill is an important first step in helping position Indiana for the kind of economic growth and development that will benefit all Hoosiers in the years to come. I wish to express my gratitude to the governor and legislature for their hard work in crafting legislation that will move Indiana down a path to a more prosperous future. They have helped establish a sound foundation for further progress.
"The budget bill serves the business community well, and that is important for a sound economy. Homeowners have been protected from rising property taxes. But education, especially higher education, will continue to face challenges. We at IU will work closely with the governor and the General Assembly to ensure that we are doing our part to contribute to the state's development through our teaching, research and service missions."
