HHE visit and IU Life Sciences Day at the Statehouse

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 16, 2007

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University will host its Sixteenth Annual Hoosiers for Higher Education Statehouse Visit and its second Life Sciences Day at the Statehouse on Tuesday (Feb. 20).

Life Sciences Day will feature exhibits from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. by top faculty from IU's life sciences disciplines. The day's agenda also includes demonstrations of research being conducted in diabetes, breast cancer, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, environmental sciences and nursing. Various faculty will be available throughout the day to discuss their expertise in areas such as genomics, mental health services, brain sciences, molecular genetics, bioethics, neuroimaging and the translation of research to viable commercial products.

The annual Hoosiers for Higher Education Statehouse Visit provides an opportunity for advocates of IU to attend and learn more about the university's biennium budget request, which this year also includes a request to fund a bold initiative to expand life sciences programming. Students, faculty, staff and alumni from throughout the state will engage with hometown legislators about the importance of supporting IU with their votes.

A reception is scheduled at the Indiana Roof Ballroom following the visits with legislators. It will feature remarks by IU President Adam W. Herbert, who also will present the Welsh-Bowen Distinguished Public Office Award, the Welsh-Bowen Scholarship and the Sue H. Talbot Distinguished HHE Volunteer Award.

Registration for those wishing to attend events throughout the day is scheduled in the Statehouse Rotunda beginning at 1:30 p.m. A special program featuring President Herbert and IU Vice President for Life Sciences D. Craig Brater will begin at 2 p.m. in the North Atrium.
