BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Patrick Milligan of Williamsport, Ind., an incoming freshman at Indiana University, has been selected by the university as a Wells Scholar. The scholarship, named in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.

Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus. The program also offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. The program emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors.

Wells Scholars are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Valedictorian of his class, Milligan is the first Wells Scholar from Seeger Memorial High School, where he earned additional distinction as a Hoosier Scholar and as the recipient of a President's Education Award and an American Legion Award.

He attended the Molecular Medicine in Action Conference and the Lugar Symposium. He was a four-year member and three-year captain of the Social Studies Academic Super Bowl team, which won the state championship his junior year.

Milligan was a member and officer of the math team, which won third place in regional competition. In addition to serving as senior class president, Patrick was a four-year member of Student Council, serving as vice president his senior year. He was a member of 4-H, as well as a member of the marching, concert, pep and pit bands. He was also a member of Knowledge Masters and the Spanish club.

He intends to prepare himself for a career in medicine by choosing a major in the sciences.

Hometown information: Patrick Milligan is the son of Steve and Karen Milligan, 3198 N. 425W, Williamsport, Ind.
