David Baker receives jazz living legend award at Kennedy Center -- An Indiana University professor from the Jacobs School of Music recently was recognized as a living legend among jazz artists. Distinguished Professor David N. Baker received the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' "Living Jazz Legend Award" for lifetime achievement on March 3 in Washington, D.C. Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute CEO joins Informatics board -- James Buher, president and chief executive officer of the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute, has joined the Dean's Advisory Council at the Indiana University School of Informatics. Buher joins a group of business, community and industry leaders who advise the school on curriculum and program development, public and private sector funding, research support, long-range planning, student guidance, external relations and institutional advancement. IU's annual School of Continuing Studies Day at the statehouse -- Indiana University will host its Second Annual School of Continuing Studies Day at the statehouse on March 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A luncheon and recognition program will begin at 11:30 a.m., with all activities being held in the North Atrium. Harris captures title at Mountain View Collegiate, Hoosiers third -- Junior Elaine Harris captured her first individual title with a seven-under-par total of 209 (70-69-70) at the Mountain View Collegiate on Sunday, March 25. With her victory on the SaddleBrooke Country Club, Harris becomes the first Hoosier to capture individual medalist honors since Shannon Johnson captured the 2006 UNLV Spring Invitational. Baseball -- Five Indiana pitchers combined for a 4-0 shutout of IPFW on Sunday to push Indiana's win streak to six games.

Women's golf -- Junior Elaine Harris captured her first individual title with a seven-under-par total of 209 (70-69-70) at the Mountain View Collegiate.

Men's tennis -- The Indiana men's tennis team won its first Big Ten match of the season with a 6-1 victory over Iowa.

Women's swimming -- Indiana senior Leila Vaziri finished sixth overall in the heats of the 100-meter backstroke at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia, on Monday, March 26, advancing to the semifinals later in the day.

Indianapolis Star, March 25 -- It is testimony to Bill Garrett's stature that the man to whom he most frequently is compared didn't play his position (center) or even his sport (basketball).
