Earth Week events at IU SPEA

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs, in conjunction with the student-run Environmental Management Association, will host a weeklong series of Earth Day events in Bloomington April 14-20. Features include a poetry open mic night, speakers and musicians at the Bloomington Farmer's Market, presentation of several U.S. Forest Service Awards and an Earth Day Extravaganza at Dunn Meadow.

Step It Up Bloomington: national day of climate change action
Saturday, April 14, Bloomington Farmer's Market -- Step It Up is a national day of climate change action taking place across the nation. Step It Up Bloomington will take place at the Bloomington Farmer's Market on Saturday (April 14) morning and will feature various speakers and musicians, including Mayor Mark Kruzan, Congressman Baron Hill, singer/songwriter Carrie Newcomer and author Scott Russell Sanders. Designing climate change legislation: brownbag discussion with Kenneth Richards
Tuesday, April 17, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Business Building Room 108 -- Kenneth Richards is an associate professor in SPEA and has worked extensively with environmental issues ranging from carbon sequestration to environmental policy instrument choice. Richards will be discussing the elements of effective climate change legislation as well as the structure of current climate change bills in Congress.

Recycling facility tour at Hoosier Disposal
Tuesday, April 17, 3 p.m. -- Groups will be leaving from the parking lot behind the SPEA building on the IU Bloomington campus (1315 E. 10th St.) at 2:45 p.m. for a one hour tour of the recycling facility. Participants must RSVP by Friday, April 13th by contacting Monica Paulson at moepauls@indiana.edu. She asks that "Recycling tour RSVP __# of people" be included in the subject line of the e-mail, as inner text will not be read.

SPEA Earth Week Open Mic Night
Wednesday, April 18, 7 p.m., SPEA Atrium -- In conjunction with the SPEA Earth Week Poetry Forum, an open mic night will be held for the university and the Bloomington communities. Free food will be provided and attendees are encouraged to share original poetry, environmentally-themed poetry or musical talents. For more information, contact Julie Graf at grafj@indiana.edu. WonderLab Museum outdoor volunteer opportunity
Thursday, April 19, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m., WonderLab Museum, 308 W. 4th St. -- Volunteers will help clean-up the WonderGarden outside of the WonderLab Museum and will receive free admission to the museum for the day. WonderLab will provide gloves, tools, expertise and snacks. To participate, contact Alison Behling at abehling@indiana.edu by Monday, April 16.

Eben Fodor talk and book signing
Thursday, April 19, 7 p.m. - 8:45 p.m., Monroe County Public Library Auditorium -- Eben Fodor is a community planning consultant with Fodor and Associates and the author of Better, Not Bigger: How to Take Control of Urban Growth and Improve Your Community. A leading researcher on the fiscal impacts of growth and development in the Northwest, Fodor represents businesses, individuals and community groups in helping to resolve land use and development conflicts.

U.S. Forest Service Award Presentation
Friday, April 20, 2:30 p.m., SPEA Atrium -- Ken Day, Forest Supervisor of the Hoosier National Forest, will be presenting awards to Vicky Meretsky (SPEA faculty member), James Rogers (Bradford Woods), Stori Snyder (Hilltop Garden and Nature Center), Luke Flory (doctoral student in biology), and Penny Volrich (SPEA staff member) for their work in helping to eradicate invasive species from Hoosier forests. A reception will follow.

Earth Day Extravaganza!
Friday, April 20, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m., Dunn Meadow -- Festivities will include tree planting and revitalization efforts along the Jordan River, tree give-aways for personal CO2 offsets, live music, a corn hole tournament (grand prize is a pair of tickets to see O.A.R. at the IU Auditorium), informational booths from campus and community groups, as well as free food, games and prizes.
