Indiana University's Mini University closes registrations due to record enrollment
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 6, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Registrations for Indiana University's popular Mini University have topped last year's record-setting enrollment of 468, prompting organizers to close registration for the first time in the event's 35-year history in order to preserve the Mini U. experience.
People still wishing to attend the week-long program, which begins June 17, should call the IU Alumni Association at 800-824-3044 or 812-855-6120 to add their names to a wait list for enrollment or to be included on the mailing list for Mini U. 2008
Mini U., a program co-sponsored by IU Bloomington Continuing Studies and the IU Alumni Association, started in 1972 with around 75 "students" experiencing a unique educational vacation program for adults. Participants brought their families, lived for the week in a college dormitory and attended a variety of lectures and courses while their kids attended a children's program held at Shawnee Bluffs on Lake Monroe.
Today's program is significantly different from those early years -- there is no longer a children's program, and dormitory living went by the wayside several years ago. The program now features close to 100 short courses taught by IU faculty, offered mainly in the Indiana Memorial Union, which is also where the majority of participants stay. In addition, there are evening activities, including a picnic, a trip to the Brown County Playhouse, and a reception at the university president's residence.
IU Bloomington Continuing Studies provides opportunities for adults to engage in lifelong learning. Programs include General Studies degrees, noncredit courses in Lifelong Learning and Professional Development, Mini University and Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County. All programs draw upon the resources of IU Bloomington and are offered on campus and at community locations in Bloomington and the surrounding area.
The IU Alumni Association is dedicated to serving the university and its diverse alumni, students and friends. As one of the nation's largest alumni organizations, serving nearly 490,000 graduates worldwide, the IUAA provides many programs and services to its members, non-member alumni, and the university.
