Report shows trends in Indiana's energy production and use -- A new report by Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Indiana Geological Survey at IU describes Indiana's energy consumption and production by sector and fuel type, drawing comparisons between the state and the rest of the U.S. The "Indiana Energy Report 2007" is intended as a resource for decision makers and other citizens concerned with Indiana's energy needs and the impact of its energy-related activities. Big Ten Network to officially launch August 30 -- The new Big Ten Network officially launches in prime time at 7 p.m. Central Time on Thursday, Aug. 30, with the evening also marking the inaugural telecast of Big Ten Tonight, the network's signature studio-based news, information and highlight show. In the first systematic multi-year analysis of malpractice claims solely against pediatricians, researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine report in the July issue of the journal Pediatrics that the answer is neither yes nor no. Sue H. Talbot reelected by alumni as IU trustee -- Indiana University alumni elected Sue H. Talbot, Bloomington, Ind., to a third three-year term as IU trustee today (June 30). Talbot, who was first elected in 2001, received 8,586 of the 29,418 valid votes cast. Read the complete story.

This Week on Sound Medicine: Fireworks and Hand Injuries; Tooth Decay Study; Lasik Surgery and Aging Eyes; Campers and Shots; and When Illness Goes Public -- This weekend (June 30 and July 1), Sound Medicine celebrates the Fourth of July holiday with helpful safety tips on how to properly handle fireworks displays. Each year, emergency rooms across the nation treat many hand injuries, ranging from burns to missing fingers, due to improper use of fireworks. Fitzgerald Named to Clinical Leadership Posts at IU School of Medicine and IU Medical Group -- John F. Fitzgerald, M.D., M.B.A., Indiana University School of Medicine's associate dean for primary care, has been named president and chief executive officer of IU Medical Group - Specialty Care and appointed the school's executive associate dean of clinical affairs. McRobbie begins presidential term
Indiana Daily Student, July 2 -- There was no fanfare for Michael McRobbie when he officially took the helm of IU on Sunday. His formal presidential inauguration ceremony won't be until Oct. 18. He won't be moving into Bryan House for at least a year. The presidential office in Bryan Hall won't be ready for him for at least another week. But that doesn't mean he isn't ready for the responsibility. Read the complete story.

Virtual Worlds as Social-Science Labs; How one professor uses online games as petri dishes of human behavior
The Chronicle of Higher Education, July 6 issue -- Edward Castronova has been a wizard, a clergyman, and lately, a monster-slaying blonde, all inside virtual worlds. Scholars may consider time spent immersed in digital fantasy worlds to be frivolous -- but it has sent Mr. Castronova's academic career soaring. Three years ago, Indiana University at Bloomington recruited him to focus exclusively on the study of virtual worlds. Walter Gantz, chairman of Indiana's telecommunications department, says he and other faculty members went after Mr. Castronova because "he seemed to be at the forefront" of the emerging discipline of virtual-worlds research. Survivors Of Rare Ovarian Cancer Retain Fertility, Have Positive Relationships, Study Finds
Science Daily, July 1 -- Ovarian germ cell tumor patients treated with platinum-based chemotherapy and fertility-sparing surgery are likely to retain their menstrual function and reproductive ability, according to the largest and most comprehensive survey of survivors ever conducted. IU faculty Anna M. Miller, Stephen D. Williams, Victoria L. Champion, Patrick O. Monahan and Qianqian Zhao are all co-authors. Read the complete story.

Alumni re-elect Talbot
Indiana Daily Student, July 2 -- IU alumni re-elected Sue Talbot on Saturday to serve her third three-year term on the IU board of trustees. With a total of 8,586 votes, Talbot lead the election, with Ray Richardson, a former IU trustee and Indiana congressman, getting 7,409 votes. Read the complete story.
