IU India Studies announces its lecture series

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- This spring's India Studies lecture series at Indiana University will again bring leading political, art and cultural scholars of India and South Asia to the IU Bloomington campus, including some who already are based here.
The lecture series, which is free and open to the public, will begin on Feb. 1 with a presentation by Sumit Guha, professor of history at Rutgers University. Guha will speak on the topic, "Language Politics in Pre-modern Western India c.1300-1800." All the events will begin at 5:30 p.m. at India Studies House, 825 E. 8th St.
Other events in the series will include:
- Feb. 8 -- "Rebuilding Teacher Education in Afghanistan: USAID's Higher Education Project," by Terrence Mason, associate dean of faculties, associate professor of English, and director of the Center for Social Studies and International Education at IU Bloomington.
- Feb. 22 -- "Afghanistan's Inept Suicide Attackers: Explaining their Incompetence," by Christine Fair, senior research associate at the Center for Conflict Analysis and Prevention and an advisor to the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan.
- March 17 -- "A Tale of Two Talks: Pleasures and Perils of Reading India's Epics of Antiquity in Modernity," by Robert Goldman, professor of Sanskrit, Department of South & Southeast Asian Studies, University of California at Berkeley.
- March 28 -- "(Re)assessing Kutiyattam, Sanskrit Theatre of India," by Farley Richmond, professor of theatre and film studies and director of the Center for Asian Studies at the University of Georgia.
- April 11 -- "Why Study Madrassahs? Islamic Seminaries in South Asia," by Ali Riaz, associate professor of politics and government, Illinois State University.
- April 15 -- The Tiwari Memorial Lecture, "Forests and the Environmental History of Modern India," by Kalyanakrishnan Sivaramakrishnan, professor of anthropology at Yale University.
