IU jumps 21 places on Kiplinger's list of 100 Best Values in Public Colleges -- Indiana University has made a strong improvement in its ranking this year by Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine of its "100 Best Values in Public Colleges." Rankings of what the magazine called the "the best public colleges (that) deliver a first-rate education without breaking the bank" appear in its February issue. IU Bloomington improved by 21 positions to 34th overall and fourth among Big Ten schools. Read the complete story.

IU's activities commemorating King to include presentation by Calvin Mackie -- Indiana University will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy with activities, Jan. 18-21, including a speech on Jan. 20 by Calvin Mackie, an award-winning speaker, author and Hurricane Katrina survivor. Other events will include a day of activities for elementary school children at the IU School of Education, an interfaith prayer service, a leadership breakfast and a unity summit. Diabetes conference designed to enlighten, encourage patients and families -- "Taking Control of Your Diabetes," a one-day conference for people with all types of diabetes and their families, will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Indianapolis Convention Center. Speakers also will include diabetes specialists from IU School of Medicine, the University of Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center and others from the Indianapolis community. IU Bloomington provost affirms importance of research at public universities -- Karen Hanson, the provost and executive vice president of Indiana University Bloomington, has joined academic leaders of other Big Ten institutions in affirming the importance of maintaining ambitious research programs at public research universities. Public managers need skills for collaboration and negotiation, report says -- Public managers increasingly make decisions and address problems as part of networks of agencies and organizations. As a result, they need to develop skills that are essential to collaborative problem-solving, says a new report co-authored by an Indiana University professor. Read the complete story.

Hoosiers slightly more pessimistic about school quality in annual survey -- The results of the fifth annual Public Opinion Survey on K-12 Education in Indiana by the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at the Indiana University School of Education find public attitudes are slightly down regarding the overall quality of schools in the state. The survey gauged the attitudes and perceptions of a representative sample of Hoosiers on key educational issues. Read the complete story.

Riley autism center gets $2.2 million boost
Indianapolis Star, Jan. 9 -- Riley Hospital for Children today will announce a $2.2 million federal grant to expand research and clinical care services at the hospital's Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center. "There's no other program like it in Indiana," said Naomi Swiezy, the center's clinical director and a psychology professor at IU's medical school. "What we found is that parents and teachers are getting tons of awareness, but then they don't know how to apply that knowledge." Read the full story.

Survey: Non-attendees find faith outside church
USA Today, Jan. 9 -- A new survey of U.S. adults who don't go to church, even on holidays, finds 72% say "God, a higher or supreme being, actually exists." But just as many (72%) also say the church is "full of hypocrites." Still, most of Christian belief has seeped into popular culture outside church walls and denominational tethers, says Philip Goff, a professor and director of the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture at Indiana University in Indianapolis. New forms of community, such as Internet Bible study and prayer circles, also mean some people don't believe they need a church, Goff says. Read the full story.

IU task force on sustainability to develop program
Indiana Daily Student, Jan. 9 -- After releasing a report Monday, the IU Task Force on Campus Sustainability will begin developing a program to make the IU campus more environmentally friendly. IU Vice President of Administration Terry Clapacs organized a 16-member task force last March to offer administrative direction for the sustainability report. The task force's main job is to evaluate and improve resource use, recycling, energy use, environmental quality, land use, transportation, food and education on campus to be more environmentally friendly. IU poll: Support for shift in school taxes
Indianapolis Star, Jan. 9 -- A new Indiana University poll shows many Hoosiers favor an overhaul of the state's education system, including changes in school funding, how many school districts exist and how teachers are paid. Read the full story.
