Indiana University, University of Wisconsin partner to offer federal safety training -- Indiana University and its partner, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, were selected as one of eight new education centers to provide training for the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The selection will allow the consortium, led by IU and the Safety Program in IU Bloomington's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, to provide health and safety training to private-sector and federal employees throughout OSHA's Region V, which encompasses Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. IUPUI Basketball Coach Seeks To Raise 40,000 Pairs of Shoes for Impoverished Kids -- IUPUI Basketball Coach Ron Hunter will stride onto the gymnasium floor on January 24 as the Jaguars take to the court to battle Oakland barefoot. He hopes many of the IUPUI students attending the Jaguars basketball game will be shoeless as well. By coaching shoeless, and having students barefoot, Hunter hopes to draw attention to impoverished children around the world who have no shoes and an organization that's trying to do something about it. 'Domenic Tiepolo: A New Testament' named Choice Outstanding Academic Book -- Domenico Tiepolo: A New Testament, has been named a Choice Outstanding Academic Book for 2007. The book was co-authored by Adelheid M. "Heidi" Gealt, director of the Indiana University Art Museum, and co-published by Indiana University Press in association with the museum. Report suggests new ways to deal with student discipline problems
Education Week, Jan. 14 -- Indiana's schools should come up with new ways to solve discipline issues instead of relying on strict rules that punish all students the same way, an Indiana University report says. The university's Center for Evaluation and Education Policy said recently that many schools use rules like zero tolerance policies or one-day suspensions that may not change student behavior. Lumina Awards $6.8 Million Nationwide
Inside Indiana Business, Jan. 15 -- The Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation for Education has announced more than $6.8 million in grants during the fourth quarter of 2007. Forty-one organizations in 18 states and the District of Columbia received funds. The Trustees of Indiana University were awarded three grants. Read the full story.
