Army general, IU alum to discuss leadership, fitness at HPER event

Gen. Larry R. Ellis, commanding general of the U.S. Army Forces Command, will present the Marian Godeke Miller Lecture at Indiana University Bloomington on Wednesday (Jan. 22) at 7:30 p.m. in Whittenberger Auditorium at the Indiana Memorial Union.

"Leadership and Living Well Through Healthy Lifestyles" is the title of the address by Ellis that is open to the public free of charge. His presentation is sponsored by the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) and the Department of Kinesiology.

Ellis, an IU graduate, is a four-star general with more than 30 years of Army service and overseas assignments in Germany, Vietnam, Korea and Bosnia. One of his current duties involves physical readiness of American soldiers, which relates to the title of his address and the HPER motto of "Living Well Through Healthy Lifestyles."

Ellis came to IU in 1974 as part of a partnership between HPER and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to prepare him for duties as a physical training officer at the military academy. He subsequently received a master of science degree from HPER in physical education.

Ellis assumed his current position in November 2001. His previous assignment was Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, and he was assigned to the Pentagon at the time of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The lecture series is funded by Marian and William Miller. William Miller, a prominent Lafayette physician, is on the Dean's Council at the IU School of Medicine. His wife, for whom the lecture series is named, is a HPER graduate who has been active in numerous civic and educational organizations throughout Indiana.
