Mark Long to step down from IURTC post

INDIANAPOLIS -- Mark S. Long announced today he will be stepping down as president and chief executive officer of the Indiana University Research and Technology Corp. on March 30.
Long said he has accomplished nearly all of his objectives since taking control of the organization six years ago and will be moving on to other entrepreneurial pursuits. He will remain a special adviser and consultant to IU Vice President for Engagement Bill Stephan through the remainder of the year. Stephan is expected to head IURTC on an interim basis while the university seeks Long's successor.
IU President Michael A. McRobbie said he is grateful for the many successes recorded by the IURTC under Long's leadership.
"Mark accomplished much because of his unflagging energy and passion for the mission," McRobbie said. "He was a visionary leader in the creation and development of the Emerging Technologies Center. His accomplishments will continue to have a major impact on Indiana University's role in the economic development of the state for years to come."
The IU Emerging Technologies Center (IUETC) has created more than 350 new high-tech jobs in downtown Indianapolis at an average salary of more than $89,000 to add to the life sciences base in Indiana. Before Long's arrival in February 2002, IU had helped create four new Indiana businesses. During Long's tenure, however, the IUETC incubator has averaged around three new startups every year -- 20 new companies in Indianapolis and Bloomington.
During its four years of operation, the IUETC (351 W. 10th St. in Indianapolis) has achieved a company success rate of 97 percent, with 25 tenant companies and seven already graduated. The IUETC has received numerous awards and has drawn hundreds of visitors from countries around the world.
Under Long's guidance, IU's Technology Transfer office filed more than 100 patents for the first time in FY'07, received more than 257 invention disclosures in FY'06 and executed more than 90 licenses in FY'03, a feat that will provide significant revenue in the future. It also received a record $8.8 million in licensing and royalty revenue in FY'04. The average value of IU licenses is high among major Midwestern university business development agencies.
The Licensing and Trademarks Office, under the auspices of IURTC, achieved sales of more than $1 million for four consecutive years (FY'03, '04, '05, '06), for the first time in IU history.
