U.S. Navy Surgeon General visits IU, to speak Tuesday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Vice Adm. Adam M. Robinson Jr., U.S. Navy surgeon general and an Indiana University alumnus, will visit IU Bloomington on Tuesday (March 4) to give a public presentation that night at 7 p.m. in the Ruth N. Halls Theatre of the Lee Norville Theatre and Drama Center, 275 N. Jordan Ave.

Robinson, a native of Louisville, earned a bachelor of arts in political science at IU Bloomington in 1972 and a medical degree from the IU School of Medicine in 1976. He also earned a master's in business administration from the University of South Florida in 1995.

Following completion of his surgical internship at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, he was commissioned in the Navy. He completed a residency in general surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. His early assignments included serving as a general medical officer at Fort Allen in Puerto Rico and as staff surgeon at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan. He has been ship's surgeon on the USS Midway, the USS John F. Kennedy and the USS Coral Sea.

After completing a surgical fellowhip at Carle Foundation Hospital at the University of Illinois School of Medicine, Robinson returned to the National Naval Medical Center as head of its Colon and Rectal Surgery Division. He has been head of the General Surgery Department, director of the General Surgery Residency Program and acting medical director of the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va.

From 1995 to 1997, Robinson reported to the commander of the Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, as the force medical officer. Following that assignment, he reported to Naval Hospital Jacksonville in 1997 as the executive officer. In January 1999, as Fleet Hospital Jacksonville commanding officer, Robinson commanded a detachment of the hospital as a medical contingent to Operation New Horizon/Uphold Democracy in Haiti.

In August 1999, Robinson reported to the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery as the director of readiness. A year later, he was selected as the principal director of clinical and program policy in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, where he also served as the acting deputy assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, clinical and program policy.

He was assigned as commanding officer of the U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka from September 2001 to January 2004, after which he received assignment as deputy chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery for medical support operations with additional duty as acting chief of the Medical Corps.

In July 2004, Robinson reported as commander of the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, and assumed the duties as commander of the Navy Medicine National Capital Area Region in October 2005. He was nominated by President Bush to become the surgeon general of the Navy and was sworn in last August.

The author of numerous presentations and publications, Robinson holds fellowships in the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He is a member of the Le Societe Internationale de Chirurgie, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons and the National Business School Scholastic Society Beta Gamma Sigma. He holds certification as a Certified Physician Executive from the American College of Physician Executives.

His personal decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (two awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and various service and campaign awards.
