Issues in Education

Media seminar to feature Indiana University education experts

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- From educating the growing English language learner population in Indiana to exploring recent student expression litigation, public K-12 educators face a variety of tough issues each school year. Indiana University experts are ready to help reporters sift through the intricacies of public education policy. Get ahead of the curve this school year by spending a day learning about 2008-09 issues in education.

Indiana University has organized a one-day seminar, "Issues in Education," to help reporters tackle the complex topics involved with educating children in Indiana and across the United States. Faculty experts will draw from their research and service as they discuss the following topics: the growing English language learner population in Indiana, recent student expression litigation, the 21st Century Scholar Program, getting started and staying on track at Indiana's community college and educational issues before the state legislature. In addition, IU School of Education Dean Gerardo González will welcome all reporters and be available for comments.

The casual setting will allow for an easy exchange between reporters and faculty. Reporters will be able to get sound bites, quotes, contacts and a deeper understanding of some of the challenging issues of the day.

The seminar is scheduled for July 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 4095 of the Business/SPEA Building, 801 W. Michigan St., on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. The $15 registration fee includes a catered breakfast and reservations are due by Thursday, July 3.

This mailing includes a brief biography of the presenters and a registration form that should be returned by Thursday, July 3. The registration form also can be accessed at https://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/8440.html. To view the agenda, click here: https://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/8434.html.
