Collins is an academic adviser for the School of Continuing Studies and an adjunct faculty member at IU Kokomo. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in general studies in 2001 and a master of science degree in adult education in 2004.

"Obtaining these degrees while working in the Indiana University Kokomo Continuing Studies division is an inspiration to all students pursuing a degree," Daniel Callison, professor and dean of the IU School of Continuing Studies, said of Collins.

As an adjunct faculty member at IU Kokomo, Collins created two classes -- "College Colloquium for Returning Adult Students" and "Introduction to Computers and Their Use," to meet the educational needs of adult students.

In addition, Collins volunteers with Kokomo Urban Outreach, a group that feeds, clothes and ministers to the underprivileged. As part of her volunteer efforts, Collins coordinated a group of volunteers who collected and refurbished old computers, then provided computer training to Kokomo Urban Outreach's clients.

The Distinguished Alumni Award of the IU School of Continuing Studies Alumni Association is presented annually to a School of Continuing Studies graduate who has provided outstanding service to the public and IU. The award recipient receives a plaque at an appropriate function on the campus from which his or her School of Continuing Studies degree was conferred. The recipient's name is also inscribed on a permanent plaque located in the office of the Dean of the School of Continuing Studies on the IU Bloomington campus.

Collins received her award on Aug. 28 at the IU Kokomo Alumni Association's Summer Campus Barbecue sponsored by the Student Government Association.

The deadline for nominations for the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award of the IU School of Continuing Studies Alumni Association is March 31, 2009. Nomination forms can be found at https://alumni.indiana.edu/groups/continuing/docs/daaForm.pdf.
