Selected Coptic Textiles from Ancient Egypt
Now-spring 2009, Gallery of the Art of the Western World, Indiana University Art Museum, first floor, Bloomington -- Nearly 100 years ago, more than 150 textiles dating from the third to the 12th centuries and spanning late Roman, early Byzantine and early Islamic times were unearthed from shallow burials in the sandy soils of Egypt. The examples included in this new gallery installation have not been on display since 1999 and are being reintroduced to complement the Middle Eastern Arts Festival organized by the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies program of Indiana University. The Grand Tour: Art and Travel, 1740-1914
Now-Dec. 21,10 a.m. to 5 p.m., IU Art Museum, Special Exhibitions, Bloomington --This exhibition examines the phenomenon of the Grand Tour, an extended period of travel that was popular with artists and wealthy tourists from the mid-18th to the early-20th century. Music recitals bring holidays, Broadway to Vivian Auditorium
Dec. 4-5, 7 p.m., IU East Vivian Auditorium, Richmond -- The public is invited to attend a duo recital featuring IU East students Danielle Phelps and Ryan Shaw. Both performances are free and open to the public. Phelps will perform Christmas favorites such as "O Holy Night," "Santa Baby," "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," and "Christmas Is." Phelps is a senior majoring in general studies. She participated in both Wayne County Idol and Preble County Idol and hopes to become a professional singer. Shaw is also a senior at IU East majoring in secondary education. He will be singing "Broadway Through the Years" with selections from the Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Wicked, Sweeny Todd, and perform a duet from Big River with his brother, Kyle Shaw. BFA Painting Exhibition
Dec. 4-6, 7-9 p.m., SoFA Gallery, 1201 E. Seventh St., Bloomington -- The School of Fine Arts Gallery at IU is pleased to announce the upcoming BFA Painting Exhibition and The School of Fine Arts Abroad. A reception will be held Dec. 5 from 7-9 p.m., in the SoFA Gallery, while the exhibit runs Dec. 2-6. Each year, the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts and the IU Office of Overseas Study partner to offer summer programs in Europe to School of Fine Arts students. The School of Fine Arts Abroad: International Programs exhibit will feature artworks produced by participating students during three study abroad programs taught by members of the IU Fine Arts faculty. Indiana University Kokomo to present Winter Concert
Dec. 5, 7 p.m., IU Kokomo's Havens Auditorium, Kokomo -- Holiday music will fill the air as the Indiana University Kokomo Singers and the Crescendo Show Choir take the stage for their Winter Concert. Under the direction of David Britton and Danielle Steele, voices will unite in the singing of traditional holiday music with some contemporary tunes rounding out the show. This family event will feature holiday songs such as the "Twelve Days of Christmas," "Sleigh Bells," "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly," and the classic, "Jingle Bells." The one-hour concert is open to the public, and organizers will collect non-perishable food items for the Kokomo Rescue Mission. Admission and parking are free. James Snodgrass opening reception
Dec. 5, 5-8 p.m., Eleanor Prest Reese & Robert B. Berkshire Galleries, Herron School of Art and Design, Indianapolis -- This exhibition will survey in depth the colorful, abstract paintings of James Snodgrass (Herron 1952) from the 1990's to the present. A display of select figurative works from Snodgrass' time at Herron in the 1950's will also be featured. The exhibition is open through Jan. 17. The riotously funny Marisol takes to the stage
Dec. 5-6, 9-13, Wells-Metz Theatre, Bloomington -- Trapped in the tempestuous world of violence and anger that is New York City, a young woman turns to her guardian angel. The angel, however, remains ensnared by her own battles: an aging God is dying and seemingly plans to take everyone with him. The result is a complete disintegration of reason and logic in the world. Often upsetting, but riotously funny, Marisol speaks to the sense of disorder and disillusionment in contemporary society while driving home the vast importance of a single word: hope. The Nutcracker comes to the MAC stage
Dec. 5-7, various times, Musical Arts Center, Bloomington -- This holiday tradition features the beloved music of Tchaikovsky while telling the story of young Clara, who receives a toy soldier nutcracker from her mysterious godfather. When she falls asleep with the Nutcracker in her arms and starts to dream, magical things begin to happen. This Nutcracker production will feature choreography created specifically for the Jacobs School's talented dancers by Michael Vernon, chair of the Jacobs School of Music Ballet Department. The production will be conducted by guest Kevin Noe, artistic director and conductor of the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. The set was designed by C. BFA Thesis Exhibition
Dec. 9 -13, SoFA Gallery, 1201 E. Seventh, Bloomington -- The School of Fine Arts Gallery Thesis Exhibition will hold an opening reception for this exhibit on Dec. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the SoFA Gallery. This exhibition will highlight artworks created by undergraduate graphic design, metals and photography students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program at the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts. The Chimes of Christmas return during the holiday season
Dec. 10, 7:30 p.m., IU Auditorium, Bloomington -- Chimes of Christmas, the Bloomington holiday tradition from the IU Jacobs School of Music, will ring in the holidays at IU Auditorium. The annual Jacobs School of Music's Chimes of Christmas concert features the IU Wind Ensemble, the IU Trombone Choir and all 125 members of the Grammy-nominated Singing Hoosiers. This event is one of the most popular of Bloomington's holiday celebrations and showcases a wide variety of traditional Christmas songs and spirituals. General public tickets range from $13 to $19 for adults and $11 to $14 for children 12 and under and IU Bloomington students. The Holiday Art Sale and Auction
Dec. 10-12, noon to 4 p.m., The SoFA Gallery, 1201 E. Seventh St., Bloomington -- The School of Fine Arts Gallery will have its annual Holiday Art Sale and Auction, featuring current work donated by faculty and students from the IU Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts. Additional works on display have been donated by the Friends of Art from anonymous donors and private collections. The sale will open Dec. 10 and end with a silent auction on Dec. 12, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the SoFA Gallery. All events are free and open to the public. The sale will include works from the IU Fine Arts program including jewelry, photography, painting, printmaking, ceramics and textiles. There will be special jewelry pieces made specifically for this event by IU metalsmithing and jewelry design students and faculty. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase beautiful wearable, functional and non-functional art pieces made by IU artists for themselves or as holiday gifts for friends and family. The Community of Modern Dance

The Time Jumpers
Jan. 24, 8 p.m., Ogle Center IU Southeast, New Albany -- The Time Jumpers is a Western Swing Band with two awards from the Association of Western Artists, one from the Western Music Association and two Grammy nominations. This group of Nashville's studio elite has evolved from casual jam sessions at the Grand Ole Opry to performing on the main stage, and becoming the Monday night destination at the Station Inn in Nashville. Bob the Builder and his can-do crew, including partner Wendy, Scoop the digger, Muck the dumper, Lofty the crane and Dizzy the cement mixer, join forces in a fun-filled adventure that's brimming with sunny songs. But it's not all lyrics and laughter in Sunflower Valley. This time, Bob and his gang must strap on their tool belts and do some serious work to clean up "Spud's Big Mess." Stop Kiss explores contemporary urban life

Swinging back and forth in time, the play revolves around a brutal beating that occurs when two young women are seen kissing on a park bench in Greenwich Village.
