Exercise and psychiatric treatment

A recent study from Indiana University suggests that physical activity may play role in psychiatric therapy. According to Bryan McCormick, chief investigator in the study, even small amounts of moderate exercise -- whether it be a leisurely stroll or gardening -- can improve the mood of people with serious mental illnesses (SMI) such as bipolar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia. Scientist Live asked McCormick, a professor in the School of Health, Physical Activity and Recreation, about his study and its implications in the following Q&A.
