Influenza A(H1N1) Prediction Video

An H1N1 virus pandemic visualization model has been created by Bruno Gonclaves of the Complex Systems Group of the IU School of Informatics. The Complex Systems Group, with support from the IU Pervasive Technology Institute and the Institute for Scientific Interchange Foundation in Torino, Italy, has employed a Global Epidemic and Mobility (GLEaM) modeler that integrates socio-demographic and population mobility data in spatially structured stochastic disease models to simulate the spread of epidemics at the worldwide scale. "London to Paris: In the Footsteps of Ernie Pyle"

During spring break 2008, a group of undergraduate and graduate students from the School of Journalism walked in Ernie Pyle's footsteps in Europe as part of a course about Pyle. Dorothy's diploma

Dorothy Hawkins-Brooks, 87, a 1968 Indiana University alumna and now faculty emeritus from Jackson State University, lost her home and most possessions when Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans. When asked recently if IU could do anything to help her, Hawkins-Brooks asked for a piece of paper, a symbol of a transformative time in her life -- a replacement diploma for her doctorate in education.   Full Story >>

Data Center Groundbreaking

IU technologist-in-chief Mark Long revisits his Florida roots

For this researcher, teaching is learning (and vice versa)

Valerie Dean O'Loughlin doesn't just teach anatomy, she studies how anatomy is taught. The Indiana University Medical Sciences Program Bloomington associate professor of anatomy and cell biology, teaches the program's basic anatomy course, medical gross anatomy course, a graduate course on Pedagogical methods in health sciences, and is the coauthor the widely used undergraduate text Human Anatomy (McGraw-Hill 2006). In recognition of O'Loughlin's commitment to the teaching of and perfection of teaching medicine, the American Association of Anatomists (AAA) will bestow on her its Basmajian Award at the society's annual meeting in May.   Full Story >>

Kostelecky elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science

Alan Kostelecky, Distinguished Professor of Physics at Indiana University Bloomington, has been elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for seminal contributions to relativity and spacetime symmetries, and for the development of a profound and comprehensive theoretical framework for relativity violations. As part of his work on relativity violations, Kostelecky formulated a theory called the Standard-Model Extension that describes all possible violations of relativity compatible with known physics.   Full Story >>

Producer, director and documentarian Peter Davis became deeply involved in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa 20 years ago. Davis has produced more than 30 full-length documentary films on social and political issues, including South Africa: the White Laager, a history of Afrikaner nationalism; Generations of Resistance, an historic account of African rebellion against white rule up to the student uprising of 1976; Winnie Mandela and Remember Mandela, which was shown on the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta in 1988. Jeffrey Hass ASCAP award

Earlier this year, Jeffrey Hass, a professor of composition at the IU Jacobs School of Music, was named the 26th annual recipient of the prestigious ASCAP Foundation Rudolf Nissim Prize. He received the award for his Symphony for Orchestra with Electronics, a 27-minute work in four movements, selected from amongst nearly 250 submissions. Hass is the director of IU Bloomington's Center for Electronic and Computer Music, which trains students in electronic and multimedia composition. He said the award will provide "unique recognition and visibility that will open up many doors for future performances of the work." Listen to the first movement of Hass' 2001 Concerto for Amplified Piano and Wind Ensemble , which opens with both trumpet and xylophone playing in a style reminscent of Morse code.   Full Story >>

A little 'byte' music

Mozart, mathematics and computers long have been an integral part of Christopher Raphael's life, and he has found a way to bring those three passions into harmony for musicians and music-lovers. Raphael, an associate professor at the Indiana University School of Informatics, has developed Music Plus One, a sophisticated computerized instrumental accompaniment program that responds in real time to a soloist's tempo changes and other expressive gestures. As the musician plays, the accompanying music is synthesized through an audio recording. Having received a $40.6 million gift and a new name, the IU Jacobs School of Music is looking toward the beginning of its second century in 2010. During festivities held in November at the Musical Arts Center in Bloomington, the school revisited its illustrious history through this video featuring performance footage of celebrated alumni such as Joshua Bell and interviews with school luminaries such as Charles Webb, David Baker and Sylvia McNair.   Full Story >>

Keeping alive the lore of Ballymenone

In his new book, The Stars of Ballymenone (Indiana University Press, 2006), IU Bloomington Professor and renowned folklorist Henry Glassie celebrates and keeps alive the legacies of those individuals who were considered stars in the tiny village of Ballymenone in Northern Ireland. Among them was the late musician/storyteller Peter Flanagan, who is pictured on the book's cover and was the first person Glassie met upon arriving in Ballymenone 34 years ago. Flanagan is featured on a CD that accompanies the book. Listen here to Flanagan performing the traditional Irish song If I Was a Blackbird.

New documentary showcases excellence of IU's Violin Virtuosi

How do you achieve excellence? That's the question asked in a new documentary about the dedicated young violinists from the String Academy at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Circling Around: Violin Virtuosi, which is being shown this month on more than 200 public television stations throughout the United States, follows the Violin Virtuosi through arduous lessons and rehearsals, challenging master classes and performances, including their tours of France and Japan. The film, produced by RIAX in association with WTIU and the Jacobs School of Music, features interviews with world-renowned String Academy alum Joshua Bell, as well as an original soundtrack by director/composer, Hideki Isoda, as performed by jazz recording artist Sara Caswell.   Full Story >>

According to the APA, Shiffrin's research "has organized the manner in which the field addresses the key issues of memory and attention ... [and] helped shape the direction of cognitive psychology. Ellen Brantlinger, a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Indiana University Bloomington's School of Education, has been recognized for her book, Dividing Classes: How the Middle Class Negotiates and Rationalizes School Advantage, published by Falmer Press in 2003. Her book was one of four American Educational Research Association Division B (Curriculum and Curriculum Studies) Outstanding Books for 2003. Roger Levesque honored for work on religion and adolescence

Roger J. R. Levesque, professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at Indiana University Bloomington, recently received the Society for Research on Adolescence Outstanding Book Award for his book, Not by Faith Alone: Religion, Law and Adolescence. The award recognizes books that shape social debates about adolescents' place in society. Not by Faith Alone explores how matters of faith serve as powerful positive influences on adolescents, as well as how they can become destructive and lead to personal and social harm.

African American emigration and the making of Liberia

Historian Claude Clegg's new book describes a 19th century movement to achieve full citizenship for African Americans -- by their emigration to the West African colony of Liberia. This movement attracted an unlikely combination of supporters. The idea of sending black Americans to Africa as a remedy for both slavery and the whole race question attracted the attention of Quakers, antislavery activists, slaveholders and several presidents, including Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln.   Full Story >>

IU's African American Dance company to celebrate with its 30th concert

The African American Dance Company at IU will hold a celebration with the presentation of its 30th concert on April 10 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. in downtown Bloomington. It is thought to be the only program of its kind at a U.S. college or university.   Full Story >>

Faculty Spotlight -- Indiana University Bloomington's Underwater Science Program received two $68,700 artifact conservationcontracts from the State of California.
