Keeping compassion in the practice

IU program stresses relationships for doctors

The conundrum has long baffled even the wisest medical school educators: Students enter flush with enthusiasm and a desire to help others. Along the way, though, many grow hardened to the needs of their patients and co-workers. Some medical schools have attempted to address this problem by instituting courses on the doctor-patient relationship or professionalism. The Indiana University School of Medicine, which graduated a class of 258 this week, has gone one step further. It's in the vanguard of a movement to produce better physicians not just by adding a class here or there but by changing dramatically the culture of medicine.
