School is nearly back in session at Indiana University. IU Bloomington will begin welcoming new and returning students next week with fall semester classes beginning Monday, Aug. 29. This fall, the Bloomington campus will host "Proud Traditions: Welcome Week 2011," which includes the annual Move-in Day and Freshman Induction ceremonies.

Indiana University's Bloomington Advisors' Council awarded the 5th annual Terri Nation Outstanding Academic Advisor Award to Harriet Castrataro for her many years of exceptional service and record of achievement as an academic advisor. Castrataro is co-director of the placement center for the Department of Applied Health Sciences in IU's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

The second annual Electronic Waste Collection Days event this month at Indiana University Bloomington collected an estimated 350,000 pounds of electronic waste for recycling and environmentally safe disposal.

IU Bloomington will celebrate its 181st commencement with three ceremonies spanning two days, where 8,346 degrees will be conferred. For the first time, there will be a separate graduate ceremony for those students receiving master's and doctoral degrees on Friday, May 7, in addition to the two undergraduate ceremonies on Saturday, May 8.

On a sunny fall day in early November, a group of 10 students from Edgewood Middle School arrived at Indiana University's Visitor Information Center ready to experience a day in the life of an IU student. The junior high students were part of a shadowing program conceptualized by IU undergraduate Savanah Franklin, a Visitor Information Center employee.

As Indiana University marks its founding 190 years ago this spring, President Michael A. McRobbie will present IU's Distinguished Teaching Awards in honor of Founders Day at a dinner on April 16. Eight IU Bloomington faculty members and two doctoral students will be recognized for outstanding teaching, research and service to the university.
