Annual Whitewater Valley Art Competition announces winners
Pieces from the annual Whitewater Valley Art Competition are on display now through Jan. 26 at Indiana University East.
Each year 300 to 400 pieces of art are entered in the competition. Previous entries have included works from high schools and universities, art organizations and centers or independent artists.
"The Whitewater Valley Annual Art Competition has grown throughout the previous 27 years," said Ed Thornburg, gallery curator. "It has brought many experienced curators from major colleges and universities and from art galleries throughout the United States to Richmond (Ind.). This annual event provides entrant artists with the opportunity for learning first-hand through the open critiques of the jurors."
Entries for the competition included drawings, paintings, mixed media, photography, printmaking, computer graphics and relief sculpture. IU East announced the winners of the competition on Nov. 29 during a reception for the artists.
Pamela Franks, curator for the Yale Art Gallery in New Haven, Conn., publicly juried the 29th competition held on Oct. 28 at IU East. The competition accepts entries from as many as 40 universities, art organizations, art centers and independent artists throughout a 300-mile radius around Richmond, Ind. Franks earned her bachelor's degree in English from Vanderbilt University and her master's degree and Ph.D. in art history from the University of Texas at Austin.
In 2003, Franks was a team member that opened the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas and served as its curator. While at Yale University Art Gallery, she was also named the Florence B. Selden Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow in the Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs. During the fellowship, she curated "The Tiger's Eye: The Art of a Magazine." She teaches university courses in American art and art history and has had several articles in publications.
