Courage and hope amid Kenya's carnage

Outside the gates of a compound surrounded by electric fencing and guards, the city of Eldoret, Kenya, was in its fourth day of chaos. Roving gangs wielded machetes, hacking people who belonged to the wrong tribe. Houses and shops were being torched. And standing in ruins was a burned-out church where at least 35 people, including children, were killed in the sanctuary. Dr. Joe Mamlin, an Indiana University professor, had seen some of the scorched bodies from the church fire at a local hospital on New Year's Day. During his search for medical supplies for the casualties, he had seen the smoke rising on the horizon and the homeless refugees clogging roads sometimes barricaded with rocks or burned-out trucks.
