IU SPEA graduate fosters environmental democracy in Georgia
Khatuna Gogaladze credits her graduate education at Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs with preparing her to manage the Aarhus Centre Georgia, which facilitates the implementation of democratic and transparent environmental policy in the republic of Georgia. And the Aarhus Centre draws on SPEA expertise in its ongoing efforts to work with government officials, nongovernmental organizations and the business and academic sectors to promote informed discussion of environmental policy.

The ringing of a bell signified the grand opening of the Sanders Financial Markets Lab at Indiana University Southeast. The lab, funded in part by a donation from Judge Carlton and Sue Sanders, allows IU Southeast School of Business students to experience real-world applications of stock market and financial techniques.

A $7.3 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to the Indianapolis Parks Foundation will help the city's parks and recreation department get to work on critically needed capital improvement projects. To ensure it's getting the most bang for the buck, Indy Parks and Recreation has contracted with IU's Center on Urban Policy and the Environment (CUPE) to analyze the location, use and economic value of city park facilities.

As a number of Indiana school corporations consider or have already set referenda for the Nov. 2 election, a new report from IU's Center for Evaluation and Education Policy (CEEP) suggests a lot of work is needed to get voters' approval. School Referenda in Indiana is the latest education policy brief from CEEP and, the authors say, a start at researching Indiana's brief history of using the school referendum process.

The Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University is joining ADA-Indiana and the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities to host Indiana's celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, an important civil rights law that was signed by President George Bush on July 26, 1990.

A new study of homicides of 797 children younger than age 5 has found that these deaths occur uniformly throughout the year, dispelling the widely held anecdotal notion that the winter months, and especially winter holidays, are a time of increased child abuse. "The seasonality of child abuse is clearly a myth," said Antoinette Laskey, associate professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine, who led the study.

Suburban areas in the Indianapolis metro area and Lake County have led Indiana's population growth over the last decade. The recent economic recession, however, has tempered growth in many of these suburban communities. Towns such as Fishers, Noblesville, Greenwood and Crown Point had population increases in 2009 that were well below their average marks since 2000. In contrast, 12 of Indiana's 13 largest cities saw greater-than-average population change in 2009.
