Wolter to head fundraising program at HPER

Stephen Wolter, a faculty member and administrator at the Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, has been named director of development and external affairs at HPER.

Wolter, an assistant professor in the Department of Recreation and Park Administration, will assume the new position on July 1. He succeeds Susanne Bair, who resigned several months ago to assume a position with the IU Foundation.

Wolter, who also directs the Eppley Institute for Parks and Public Lands at HPER, has more than 20 years of management experience in fundraising, marketing, park development, recreation, sports and event programming, and governance.

David Gallahue, dean of HPER, said, "We are excited about this appointment. We view it as a key position for the future development of our school and its message of living well through healthy lifestyles."

Throughout his career, Wolter has obtained financing for projects from individuals, non-profit organizations, government agencies and charitable foundations to construct parks, buildings and other facilities. During the past two years he has obtained sponsored research funding totaling $1.8 million for the Eppley Institute.

His new responsibilities will include developing relationships with alumni related to both fundraising and general alumni affairs. He will serve as the major gift officer for HPER and direct all fundraising campaigns for the school. In recent years an endowment campaign at HPER raised more than $8 million.

Wolter can be reached at 812-855-7083 or sawolter@indiana.edu.
