"A Potpourri of Arts in the African American Tradition" concert to be held on Nov. 8

NOTE: Photographs of the African American Arts Institute's ensembles are available on the Web at https://www.indiana.edu/~aaai.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The African American Arts Institute at Indiana University Bloomington will present the 10th annual "A Potpourri of Arts in the African American Tradition" on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave., in downtown Bloomington.

The annual concert will feature the African American Dance Company, the African American Choral Ensemble and the IU Soul Revue. The event was established in 1993 to illustrate the wide range of African American performance art produced by the AAAI through the work of its ensembles.

The performances will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the Sunrise Box Office, which is located off the main lobby of the theater, or by calling 812-339-6741. Adult general admission tickets are $13 in advance or $17 at the door. Tickets for children, students and seniors are $8 in advance and $12 at the door.

The AAAI has provided thousands of IU students with opportunities to explore their talents in performance and arts management. It also has allowed students from a broad range of fields to learn about the history and culture of African American music and dance. A number of AAAI alumni have used their training to become performers, producers, technicians, writers and managers.

Below is information about the ensembles:

-- The IU Soul Revue, directed by Tyron Cooper, presents high-energy musicianship and sizzling soul music. The vocal ensemble -- supported by a powerful horn line and rhythm section -- delivers sounds of timeless R&B, soul, funk and contemporary forms of urban black popular music.

-- The African American Dance Co., directed by Iris Rosa, exhibits energy, rhythm, precision and grace. The company's original choreography is a fusion of modern, jazz, African and Latin American dance styles.

-- The African American Choral Ensemble, directed by James E. Mumford, showcases the joy, sorrow, reflection and celebration in a broad repertoire of spirituals, folk form and traditional and contemporary gospel music. Eighty to 100 voices also perform the works of African American composers.
