FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct. 7, 2009

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Hundreds of Indiana's top optometrists are converging on the Indiana University Bloomington campus today as the Indiana Optometric Association's (IOA) annual fall seminar gets under way.

Optometrists from across the country, including seminar presenters from Oregon, New Jersey, New York, Kentucky and Oklahoma, will spend two days in Bloomington focusing on the latest issues in eye care and ocular disease management, according to Sarita Soni, interim dean of the IU School of Optometry.

"This annual event on the beautiful Bloomington campus offers an opportunity for the Indiana University School of Optometry and its alumni to connect every year," said Soni. "I know our students and faculty welcome the opportunity to hear from the distinguished speakers, many of whom are IUSO alumni, and network with practitioners from within the state and around the country."

Paul Karpecki, one of many IU School of Optometry alumni attending the seminar, is also one of five invited speakers. He described the annual seminar as an opportunity for both educational advancement and reflection with old and new friends.

"The speakers, the venue and the topics are always cutting edge, and I find I learn more about new developments through this meeting than many others. The education committee of the IOA does an exemplary job," he said. "The added benefit is the camaraderie of IU alums that is experienced while here, seeing the school, classmates and just the enthusiasm of sharing time with fellow IU grads. It's always an honor to return to my alma mater."

Karpecki, an optometrist now in Lexington, Ky., will discuss the diagnosis and therapeutic management of anterior segment conditions Thursday afternoon. Other topics from other presenters include the management of glaucoma and secondary glaucomas, aberrometry in the clinical care of surgical and non-surgical patients, and common neuro-ophthalmic manifestations.

Registration got under way today (Oct. 7), with lectures and associated events continuing through tomorrow. All events are being held at the Indiana Memorial Union.
