BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Ambassador Arun K. Singh, deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of India to the United States in Washington, D.C., will speak at Indiana University Bloomington on Friday, Oct. 23.

Singh will discuss the topic, "India and the U.S.: The Challenges of Partnership," at 5:30 p.m., at India Studies House, 825 E. Eighth St. His presentation is part of IU India Studies' fall lecture series. The event is free and the public is invited.

Singh served as ambassador of India to Israel from April 2005 to September 2008. He assumed his new assignment as deputy chief of mission at India's U.S. embassy in October 2008.

He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1979 after completing a master's degree in economics from Delhi University and teaching there for two years. Singh's first assignment abroad was at the Embassy of India in Moscow from 1981 to 1982. Later, he served at the Indian Missions in Addis Ababa as second secretary from 1982 to 1985 and in Tokyo as first secretary from 1985 to 1988.

On returning to Delhi at the headquarters of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, he served as deputy secretary and director dealing with the East Asia and Pakistan Divisions from 1988 to 1991. From 1991 to 1993, he headed offices for the foreign secretary and then the external affairs minister of India.

Singh served at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997 as counsellor and handled multilateral social and economic negotiations. He served in the Indian Mission at Moscow again as counselor and minister from 1997 to 2000.

During another assignment in Delhi from 2000 to 2005, he served in the capacity of joint secretary, dealing first with India's policies toward the United Nations and the Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran division at the Ministry of External Affairs.
