IUB to host mini college fair for Indianapolis area students

Indiana University Bloomington will host a mini college fair for high school students from Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) and the surrounding township on Feb. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the auditorium of the Madame Walker Theatre Center, which is located at 617 Indiana Ave. in Indianapolis. The "Making History with IU" event is part of Black History Month and recognizes the upcoming 50th anniversary of the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education case.

Students will be provided with information designed to help them make decisions about higher education. Presentations for ninth and 10th graders will focus on preparing for college, while those for 11th and 12th grade students will examine the process of deciding on a college and making career choices.

"IU is committed to being a racially and culturally diverse university, and this program gives IU Bloomington the opportunity to increase its outreach," said Lori Patton, director of multicultural outreach for IUB's Office of Admissions. "It gives us an opportunity to go into the communities where we are trying really hard to attract students and, at the same time, support Indianapolis and township schools in their efforts to inspire youth to achieve in higher education."

Approximately 300 students are expected to attend the event, where they will be able to meet with faculty, staff and students from various IUB academic schools and departments, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the School of Nursing, the School of Journalism and the Kelley School of Business. Students will meet representatives from various cultural centers and programs on campus and learn about college preparation, financial aid and student life. A surprise presentation also is planned.
