IU Bloomington police chief to retire

Michael Hanson retires after 39 years at Indiana University

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington Police Chief Michael Hanson will retire after 39 years of service to the campus, the last 18 as deputy chief and chief.

"This length of service to one institution is rare, and it is indicative of Chief Hanson's loyalty and devotion to IU and the IU Police Department," said IU President Michael McRobbie. "Provost (Karen) Hanson and I are deeply grateful for his dedication to the safety of our campus community. He leaves with our very best wishes."

The IU Bloomington campus is comprised of over 3,000 acres and approximately 40,000 faculty, staff and students.

"The IU Bloomington police department is small in comparison with those of many similarly populated campuses," said John Applegate, IU vice president for planning and policy. "It is a remarkable leadership accomplishment to have protected so many people, so many facilities, and so much property for so long, and with so much success. This is in very large part due to Mike's guidance."

According to Mark Bruhn, IU associate vice president for assurance and public safety, the campus will do a broad search for a new chief, in order to ensure the best possible candidates for this important leadership role. IU has appointed current administrative captain Jerry Minger as interim chief of police, and current operations captain Keith Cash as interim deputy chief, reinstating the deputy chief position to assure continuity of operations.

"IU is in a very good situation," said Bruhn. "Both of these individuals are highly capable, and should they choose, they will be strong candidates for chief. Our over arching goal with this interim arrangement is to maintain uninterrupted, effective operations while also ensuring that all of the support and managerial functions receive appropriate attention."
