IU publications board appoints editors for newspaper and yearbook

April 13, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Student Media Board has appointed newspaper and yearbook editors-in-chief for the upcoming school year.

Carrie Schedler

Junior Carrie Schedler, of Bexley, Ohio, has been appointed editor-in-chief of the summer 2010 Indiana Daily Student newspaper, and junior Sarah Brubeck, of New Palestine, Ind., has been named its editor this fall.

Sophomore Christine Ashack, of Charlestown, Ind., will be the editor of the 2011 Arbutus yearbook.

The board interviewed Schedler from France, where she is an exchange student this semester and is a nation-and-world correspondent for the newspaper.

"Being in Paris this semester has given me a completely different view of the IDS," Schedler said. "I read the online version of the paper every day, but instead of seeing the issue from the inside and seeing the entire editing process behind the paper's production, I see the paper like our readers see it. It's been eye-opening to have that experience."

Schedler, a journalism major, has served as a copy editor and arts editor at the IDS.

Brubeck has also served the newspaper as managing editor, campus editor and investigative-team reporter. She says past editors have left an imprint on the way she thinks about journalism, which will help her in the fall.

"I want to get our editors and reporters out of the newsroom and find out what students want to read," Brubeck said. "We can't make a product that readers are going to want to pick up if we aren't teaching our writers and editors how to meet the needs of our students, faculty and staff."

In her two years at IU, Ashack has led the Arbutus yearbook staff as a managing editor and issues editor. She said she looked forward to serving as editor-in-chief.

"I love knowing that I helped create the book that people 20, 30 or 50 years from now will look at and remember all of the great times that they may have forgotten," Ashack said.

Published by students for students, the Indiana Daily Student, Inside magazine and Arbutus yearbook are among the nation's most honored collegiate publications, consistently winning top national honors. Student editors are in charge of publications content, with editorial independence granted by the IU Board of Trustees.

The publications and their sites comprise IU Student Media, a self-supporting IU auxiliary in historic Ernie Pyle Hall with the IU School of Journalism. The Daily Student, first published in 1867 and becoming daily in 1899, now publishes 15,000 copies per day, with an online readership of more than 150,000 users.
