Step into Fitness: Walking to a healthier lifestyle

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 25, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Step into Fitness, a nine-week self-guided walking program designed to help the Indiana University Bloomington campus community become more physically active, kicks off this Wednesday (May 26) at the IU Art Museum with light refreshments, fun activities, information from local wellness partners and, of course, art.

The kick-off will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the IU Art Museum, 1133 E. Seventh St.

Step into Fitness, begun five years ago by IU Campus Recreational Sports, is a free program created to inspire faculty and staff to lead active and healthy lifestyles at work and at home simply by walking more. Participants receive free pedometers along with step and food tracker charts. They also receive weekly nutrition and activity tips from Recreational Sports staff and are eligible to win weekly incentives.

The program not only strives to get people walking, but to get them to walk more -- tips and incentives encourage participants to increase their daily step count.

"Walkers have less incidence of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other killer diseases," said Megan Amadeo, assistant director of personal training for Campus Recreational Sports. "They also live longer and get mental health and spiritual benefits from the activity."

The program runs from June 1 to July 31. Participants can register online through June 4 at https://www.recsports.indiana.edu/forms/step_subscribe.htm or they can register at the member services desks at the Student Recreational Sports Center or the Wildermuth Intramural Center at the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Participants can pick up their pedometers and trackers at the member services desks or at one of the Fitness Road Show sites detailed here, https://www.iurecsports.org/step_into_fitness.
