IU Bloomington names interim vice provost for enrollment management

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 28, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- David Johnson, who has served as an associate vice provost in the Indiana University Bloomington Office of Enrollment Management since 2007, has been appointed interim vice provost for enrollment management, Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson announced today (May 28). Johnson will assume the duties of Roger Thompson, who will begin a position as vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Oregon.

"The entire campus community is enormously grateful to Roger for the outstanding job he has done in leading the Office of Enrollment Management," said Hanson. "During his tenure, the quality and diversity of the student body have increased significantly. Overall enrollment increased, average SAT scores for incoming freshmen reached record levels, enrollment of minority students increased, and Indiana's most academically talented students chose IU Bloomington in record numbers."

"I am confident that David, with his thorough knowledge of the workings of the Office of Enrollment Management, will continue to build on these successes," Hanson continued. "I look forward to working with David and his colleagues in their ongoing efforts to strengthen the Bloomington campus."

"I have been greatly influenced by Roger's strong leadership and his mark has been indelibly made at IU," said Johnson. "It is with a sense of responsibility and gratitude that I accept the opportunity to lead the Office of Enrollment Management through the next few months as we continue the strategies that have been so successful during Roger's time on campus. While building on these successes and working collaboratively with IU colleagues, I will move forward with existing and new initiatives to serve current students and to recruit and enroll future IU students."

Johnson came to Indiana University from the University of Alabama, where he served as director of enrollment services and programs. He holds a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Alabama.

In the Office of Enrollment Management at IU Bloomington, Johnson has responsibility for budget and resource planning, human resources, systems design and development, 21st Century Scholars recruitment, interactive communications, scholarships, and enrollment research. He has also worked on recruiting, marketing and programming initiatives that seek to attract academically talented students to IU.

Johnson has been a frequent presenter at national and regional conferences around the country. He has published and presented regularly on generation Y, student persistence, student recruitment, data mining, predictive modeling in student recruitment, and other topics related to student services.

A search for a permanent vice provost for enrollment management is under way.
